Installation; UV print on cowhide leather and bag handles
80 x 75 cm
The dowry gift content is always affected by trade and interlinking between different nations and cultural combinations. Looking at the difference between contemporary dowry content, I realised that the duality is no longer present. The Islamic and Arab traditions continue to mix with Western influences. The print on the leather is a cross between traditional oud perfume and international European brands. Leather and handbag referencing is utilised to question where dowry gifting situates between utility and luxury, and illustrates the tension between the East and West in contemporary dowry practices in the Middle East. The artwork aims to evoke the blurred line between the local/traditional and the global international.
